The Images of the Other and the Balkans in the Art of Artists from Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and Serbia
Sofia City Art Gallery
15 September - 26 November 2017
Opening September 14, Thursday, 18:00
The exhibition is under the patronage of the Minister of Culture of Bulgaria - Mr. Boil Banov and the mayor of Sofia - Ms. Yordanka Fandakova.
It is the first of its kind international project, initiated by a Bulgarian institution that aims to present a visual narrative with the works of some of the brightest artists from Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and Serbia, actively working in the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century Focused on the specific development of Balkan art in the shadow of the Orient, the research team at the exhibition offers the audience a meeting with artists and works emblematic of the art of the four Balkan states.
Illustrates how the Western man thinks the Balkans, the famous Balkan explorer, Maria Todorova, cites Arthur Smith, an American journalist, no doubt an adventurer who not only writes as a correspondent for the New York newspaper Evening Post, but also takes part in the Bulgarian national liberation struggles as a cheerleader. He described his first impressions of Sofia in 1907, noting that the city could disappoint the tourist looking for painting because it already has electricity, trams and is somewhat settled, "But the disappointment may be only superficial," Sofia is not so civilized to lose the charm of the old world, the spicy flavor of the East. The luster of civilization has affected only some countries superficially, and in others it has not made any noticeable changes. When you step out of the wagon corridor and step into the clean yellow station in Sofia you instinctively feel that Europe is behind you and you are in the shade of the Orient. "For the western man, the charm of the Balkans most often lies in the rays of the southern sun, the unspoiled nature and, most importantly, in the people, their inner life, real emotions, even in the home, untouched and close to the natural, removed from the modernization.
It is these conceptions and their reflections in the culture created by the opposition "its own", "Occidental Orient" and the place of the Balkans in this global discourse, are a major research focus in the exhibition. With the exclusive cooperation of the National Gallery - Alexandros Satsos Museum (Greece), the National Museum of Art in Romania, the Matitza Serbian Gallery, the Municipal Museum of Bucharest and the regional galleries of the country, the Sofia Art Gallery presents works by some of the most prominent artists from Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia. Many of them are educated abroad and at least knowing the Western way of thinking about the Balkans at least intuitively, creating works of art that fit on the one hand with the tradition of Western European painting and on the other hand function in a cultural sense as markers of their own. Thus, in the nineteenth and early 20th centuries, in the paintings of these artists who laid the foundations of the "new" secular painting in their own countries, we find the idyllic notion of birth and ordinary life, the close relationship of different cultures in the community and the distant otherness of the Orient, characterized by both civilization disorder and exotics.
That is why the interest in the nearby and distant Other remains lasting and in the course of the 20th century it is expanding, at least in relation to the Bulgarian artists. While the stories related to foreign cultures in the community continue to be present, journeys in distant, strange countries become accessible to scholarly authors, revealing new creative horizons. With the artistic quests of modernism characteristic of this period, descriptive pictures from the first years after the Liberation are also lost. Charmed and inspired by distant cultures, artists portray them in their works in a different way. So squares lit by the southern sun, craft markets, cafes with opium smokers, harems and Odalis, imaginary bathrooms appear in painting from the first half of the 20th century. The artists find out what's fitting with their temperament and add to the charm of the Orient a new way of life of painting. Another Look to the East, marked by the Balkan artist's historical and geographic link with the Shadow of the Orient.
In this sense, the exhibition "In the Shadow of the Orient", starting with the participation in a scientific conference entitled "Orientalism and the Balkans", held in March 2017, with the participation of a number of prominent researchers, reveals for the first time in a visual narrative the problem of the place of the Balkans in the great theme of Orientalism as a cultural, not a limited, art-wise concept. Theme, whose most prominent theorists remain Edward Said and Maria Todorova. Moreover, in the present exhibition, the team of the project allows to trace the reflections in the work of the Balkan artists of the dialects "our own", "We - the others", "Europe - Balkans", "East - West". These are civilization reflections that show us the diversity of the encounter and the coexistence of different cultures and ethnicities. A diversity that today's global world, in the context of modern political processes, is trying to cope - sometimes with the means of dialogue and tolerance, and sometimes with aggression. That is why the exhibition "In the Shadow of the Orient" should also be seen as an opportunity to meet an already past experience that will give us approaches to explore and interpret the current cultural chaos that has overtaken our present times, a time when the meeting with the Other, surprisingly , and perhaps explainable, is becoming more and more difficult.
The visual material in the exhibition is systematized in several contingent themes, for which audio guides have been prepared with extensive information about the visitors.
In October the presentation of the exhibition catalog, as well as the collection of reports from the scientific conference held in March 2017, is to be presented.
The project is implemented in partnership with the National Gallery of Greece in Athens, the National Gallery of Romania in Bucharest and the Matitze Gallery in Serbia and with the exclusive support of the Ministry of Culture, the Sofia Municipality, the Embassy of Greece in Bulgaria, the Embassy of Romania in Bulgaria, the Embassy Bulgaria in Greece, "13 Centuries Bulgaria" Foundation, NF "Culture".
The exhibition would not have been possible without the cooperation and professionalism of the teams of the National Gallery in Sofia, Archives State Agency, National Library "St. Cyril and Methodius "and many of the galleries in the country.
